Vitis vinifera, the common grape vine of the Old World, is native to Central Asia.
The climbing shrub has small yellow-greenish flowers and heart-shaped leaves showing dentated lobes. The fruits, called grapes, are soft and pulpy berries arranged in clusters. Traditional useGrape vine is one of the oldest plants known to man. Its cultivation has been mentioned in the bible and Egyptian hieroglyphs from approx. 2400 years B.C. describe the wine production. In addition to the grapes, the vine leaves are an essential part of the Mediterranean nutrition. Studies have shown that the French, though their diet comprises higher levels of animal fat compared to other diets, suffer less from heart diseases. Many researchers believe that this phenomenon, called the French Paradox, is ascribed to the high consumption of wine in France and to the beneficial substances present in wine. ChemistryThe leaves of V. vinifera contain a wide variety of benefical substances such as the polyphenols anthocyans, proanthocyanins, and trans-resveratrol. IndicationVine leaves and extract thereof are monographed in the French Pharmacopoeia IX. In view of the protective action on the blood vessels, traditional therapeutic indications are venous insufficiency and symptomatic disorders of the superficial capillaries.
